Attic Conversion FAQ

Process and Timeline

What is the attic conversion process from start to finish?

The process runs in clear stages: a free assessment, design and structural engineering, planning permission if it is needed, a fixed written quote, the build itself, and finally sign-off with a Certificate of Compliance. Here is how each stage works.

First we carry out a free assessment and measure up, so we can check the roof space and talk through what you want. If you are not sure your attic will work as a room, our suitability guide covers the basics. Next comes design and structural engineering. A structural engineer works out the floor strengthening and any steels, and we sort the layout, staircase position and where services will run.

If planning permission is required, that stage happens before building starts; see our planning permission page for what triggers it. Once the design is settled you get a fixed written quote, so you know the price before committing. There is no obligation to proceed.

The build then follows a set order:

  • Strengthen the floor with new joists and any steels.
  • Form the stair opening and fit the staircase.
  • Insulate, then first fix electrics and plumbing.
  • Plasterboard and skim.
  • Second fix, then decorate.

At the end we complete sign-off and issue a Certificate of Compliance, which matters for warranties and any future sale. We handle the engineering and certification ourselves. You can see the full process, step by step, or book a free assessment to get started.
