Attic Conversion FAQ

Process and Timeline

How long does an attic conversion take?

Most attic conversions take roughly 3 to 6 weeks on site once building work starts. A simple Velux conversion sits at the shorter end of that range; a dormer or hip-to-gable that needs external structural work and scaffolding takes longer, because the roof is opened up and there are more stages to complete.

The on-site time is only part of the picture. Before we start, there is lead time for design, structural engineering and, where it is needed, planning permission. Planning can add roughly 8 to 12 weeks, so it is worth checking early whether your project needs it. You can read more on our planning permission page.

Roughly, the phases run:

  • Free assessment and measure up, then design and engineering.
  • Planning permission, if required.
  • A fixed written quote before any work begins.
  • Build: strengthening the floor, forming the opening and staircase, insulating, first fix, plasterboard and skim, second fix and decorating.
  • Sign-off with a Certificate of Compliance.

Weather can affect the external stages of a dormer or hip-to-gable, so scaffolding and roof-open work is planned around the forecast. Interior work continues regardless.
