A converted attic needs very little maintenance. For the most part you treat it like any other room in the house, with only a few extra items to keep an eye on because of the roof. None of it is onerous, and most of it is simple visual checking.
The main things worth attending to are:
- Keep the rooflight seals and flashings clear of leaves and debris so water drains away as intended.
- Service any extract fans, particularly in a bathroom or shower room, so ventilation keeps working.
- If you have a dormer, inspect its flat roof periodically for any signs of wear or pooling water.
- Otherwise decorate, clean and use it exactly as you would any other room.
On the dormer point, a flat roof is typically finished in felt, EPDM rubber or GRP. These materials last many years, but like any flat roof they benefit from an occasional look, especially after a storm, so anything minor is caught early. Clearing the rooflight surrounds a couple of times a year is usually enough on that side.
Well built conversions are designed to be low maintenance, so the better the original detailing, the less you have to think about afterwards. That is one more reason the conversion process and quality of build matter. If you would like to know more, read about us or book a free assessment.
